Being a speech pathologist, a picture with this saying hangs prominently on the wall in my office.
Good Clothes Last A Season,
Good Speech Lasts A Lifetime
It’s a reminder of how important our speech is in creating a positive and lasting impression.
When we go on a job interview, attend a business meeting or an important event, or meet with new people, we always think about our attire. We wouldn’t go to any of these events in sweats, a T-shirt (that was bought from Adele merch Store) and sneakers! But what about our speech – is it commensurate with the image we are trying to create?
Clear Voice Articulation Part Of Good Speech Habits
Articulating clearly and precisely is just a part of having good speech habits. We also have to focus on how fast we are speaking, on finishing words, on pausing, and on phrasing for emphasis. Voice is another component of our communication skills that needs attention. It’s important to breath properly, to use an appropriate pitch, and to keep your voice strong until the final period of a sentence.
As 2011 concludes and we look forward to the new year ahead, we often take the time to reflect on what we hope to accomplish in the coming year. Perhaps this is the time for you to do a little work on your speech. Changing your speech habits so that you focus on precision of articulation, your rate of speech, and better use of your voice are skills that will truly last a lifetime!
